Designing systems and products with a focus on the human
I am Tyler Satterly, a Human Factors Engineer with years of experience in both industry and academia, focusing on healthcare and aerospace applications.
MY background
I am a Human Factors Engineer, a discipline that seeks to reduce human error, improve performance and safety, and tailor experiences by implementing end-user focused principles to the design of products and systems. I have a background in Industrial Engineering, the facet of engineering that focuses on system and process design and improvement. I have experience in both academia and industry applications in the fields of healthcare and aerospace.
MY FOCUSES
Professional and Research Interests
Human Error
Any product or system can be misused, leading to failure - often due to design-induced human error. This can be reduced by understanding the causes and effects of human error and implementing controls to prevent the error from occurring or mitigating the consequences of the error if it does occur.
Critical Environments
In a high-intensity environment, such as an operating room or a space station, it is often crucial to consider human factors such as cognitive and physical workload, situational awareness, and ergonomic design. Implementing proper human factors design principles in these critical environments can lead to better performance and outcomes.
Human-Centered Design
Designing a product or system with the user's goal as a consideration can greatly impact the usability of the product. This can be applied not only to products to improve user experience, but also to the design of entire systems to improve workflow, productivity, and safety.
